Greenbelt: Štrekna

13. July, 2025

There are several greenbelts in Slovenia. What I mean by that is organized, secluded roads, mainly apart from the motorways, for safe, beautiful bike travel. Many of them follow old train tracks, like the one that stretches from Velenje to Gornja Radgona, and it is absolutely wonderful.

We decided to take a family day, do something different, and explore. I pulled up a map of Slovenian bike trails, and this one caught our eye. We didn’t start that early, and still had a whole hour to reach the starting point— but we made it anyway.

Starting at 1 PM at the parking lot of a large factory (I won’t name it, but you can probably guess from the map), the trail merges straightforwardly onto the greenbelt. The path follows the river, gradually inclining until you reach Mislinja. Tunnels add an extra thrill on a hot day, then a bit more huffing and puffing, more tunnels, until finally you see the Mislinja church. From there, it’s downhill to one of the most beautiful sights—fields of hops. Surrounded by hops and open fields, the bike feels like the ultimate tool for freedom. You can descend, let go, and just be in the moment.

Follow the trail, and you’ll reach the outskirts of Gornja Radgona. You pass a petrol station, then a modern swimming center, turning left to cross the bridge and then right at the end of the street toward the Gornja Radgona hospital to reach the city center. The old churches, historic buildings, and charming square give Gornja Radgona such a calm, beautiful vibe. We enjoyed some coffee and refreshments before heading back to Velenje to meet with old friends.

It was a beautiful day through and through—a family adventure definitely worth taking.
